How Often Should I Blog? 5 Things to Remember When Deciding Blog Frequency
I have been blogging for a many years now, and one of the most important elements I had to figure out the start – and that clients with blogs often ask me – what blog frequency is best? However, while figuring out what is manageable for you is important, it isn’t all about frequency. More important than that is making sure you have something valuable to say in a consistent manner.
If you’re only blogging with SEO in mind, your readership will suffer. Instead, try to look at your blog as a way to enhance your SEO so long as your blog fits organically with your website and the content provides added value to your customers and readers. Here are five things to keep in mind when developing a manageable blog frequency.
Consistency Builds Trust
It’s up to you to figure out what kind of blog frequency you can maintain. Depending on your writing experience, a blog post can take anywhere from one to three hours to write, edit and post. If you thinking you can realistically post once a week, or once a month, go with what you can commit to. Sporadic posting or dead blogs that are still open are blog suicide. Don’t kill your blog by being inconsistent.
Size Doesn’t Matter
That is to say, don’t stress about the length of your posts. The number of words is less important that delivering a complete message. That may be accomplished in 100 words (marketer Seth Godin is known for short, quick blasts) or 1500 words (taking a cue from Jeff Bullas). Decide what works best for you and put your focus into producing and sharing a valuable lesson.
Content Considerations
If you are a plumbing company, your content should align with concerns your customers will have within that realm – they will look to you to see how to keep their pipes clean, what to do with a leaky tap, and how to find the best water heater. Moral of the story, ensure your posts fit organically with your website. Consistently providing useful information will establish you as an expert within your field.
Test Mode
Before jumping right into a new blog, take a few months to prepare a few posts and keep them in draft mode. This will give you a realistic idea of how long it takes to develop each one, and therefore, your ideal frequency in a one-month period. If you can keep up with weekly frequency, that’s great. Do that. However, if that will be a struggle and once or twice a month is a better fit, plan for that. Know your capacity and stick with it.
