Top Four Entrepreneurial Skills Needed Now
The role of an entrepreneur – perhaps more than any other – is to be able to handle pretty much anything that comes your way but some entrepreneurial skills are more necessary than most
If there’s one constant in entrepreneurial life, it’s the sheer, exciting unpredictability of it all. Every day is a new day, full of novel and unique challenges to be solved. Entrepreneurship by its nature demands a rich and varied skill set – but there are some that stand out amongst the others.
With this in mind, let’s take a deep dive into the top four skills that every entrepreneur needs to have. There are all sorts of handy skills for an entrepreneur to possess, but these four top my list.
Top Four Traits of a Successful Entrepreneur
1. Resiliency
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It’s a rollercoaster ride that can plunge you into a deep valley one moment and send you to your highest summit the very next. The key is being able to ride those waves without letting them impact your personal wellbeing, family life, self-confidence, and mental health.
To tap into my fountain of resiliency, I need look no further than my own kids. They’ve taught me countless lessons about business (and about life!) for which I am eternally grateful – including the importance of rolling with the punches and bouncing back in the face of adversity.
2. Focus
As an entrepreneur, you need to know where your feet are – and that requires focus. Without it, you can quickly spiral down a rabbit hole of churn, distraction, and unproductivity. This means compartmentalizing your life as an entrepreneur – specifically, by focusing on what matters, when it matters.
Focus on work when it’s work time. Focus on family when it’s family time. Focus on fun when it’s time to play. Focus on relaxing when it’s time to take a break. Focus on – well, you get the picture!
This is easier said than done, of course. When you concentrate on your work tasks, stay centred on your “why” to keep you moving forward. Break down big jobs so that you can focus on each microtask. You might not be able to lift 1,000 lbs at once, but you can certainly lift 1 lb 1,000 times!
Most importantly, remove distractions to help with that focus. That could involve limiting time spent checking email and social media, using Focus Mode on your devices (it’s called that for a reason, right?), or even meditating to train your mind to keep on-task. It will be this focus that will help you complete those tasks and consequently find success in moving your business forward.
3. Appreciation
It may sound arbitrary, but learning how to appreciate your network is necessary to being a successful entrepreneur. These are the people that got you where you are today – they’ve been there through your hardships and have helped you celebrate your wins.
Make a point of appreciating the people in your network. You aren’t doing this in a silo, after all – heck, even the people who have knocked you down are part of your journey in the end. We may not have appreciated those bumpy lessons at the time, but ultimately they help us grow to be smarter, savvier business owners.
4. Self-Worth
How is knowing your value and appreciating your own self-worth an entrepreneurial skill like resiliency, focus, or appreciation? Because I can tell you from experience you need to be ok with walking away from something that doesn’t feel right.
Turning down a job or opportunity that just doesn’t jive isn’t a sign of weakness or lack of ambition. Instead, it shows you’re paying attention to red flags and is looking out for your own success.
It comes down to the simple fact that our time is worth something. Your knowledge, your experience, your expertise: all of that has value. Know what you bring to the table – and if you think your worth is undervalued, here’s my advice on raising your rates without the sticker shock – because you are worth it!
